Sheriff's charity car show deemed success

Between the number of excited participants and the money raised for a great cause, the first DuPage County Sheriff's Office Car Show to benefit Special Olympics Illinois has been deemed a success.

As a result of the $20 fee paid by car show entrants and the sale of Law Enforcement Torch Run T-shirts, the sheriff's office will be donating $5,158 to the Special Olympics of Illinois.

Of the 128 entrants, Don Mukenschnabl of Downers Grove took home the People's Choice trophy for his 1953 Studebaker Hawk. A 1956 Chevy Nomad took home the Sheriff's Choice Trophy while prizes also were awarded for the best car, truck and motorcycle.

"The Special Olympics of Illinois and its mission will always be near and dear to the hearts of all of us at the DuPage County Sheriff's Office," Sheriff James Mendrick said. "To be able to raise both awareness and significant donations during such a fun event, means a lot to all of us."

The car show was an extension of "Cop on Top" and other fundraisers organized by the sheriff's office to benefit Special Olympics of Illinois.

The show is expected to return as an annual event.
