Girls volleyball: Grayslake Central nets first win for Basierak
Kate Bullman had 8 kills, Emily Friday added 8 aces, and Grayslake Central's girls volleyball team defeated host Zion-Benton 25-17, 25-10 in nonconference action Wednesday night for its first win of the season.
It was the first win for Rams first-year head coach Klaudia Basierak.
Grayslake Central (1-1) also received 4 aces from Cailin Hawn.
Glenbrook North d. Warren: The Blue Devils dropped the nonconference match 13-25, 25-20, 25-15, despite Elizabeth Weinberg's 13 kills.
Kendal Crawford had 5 kills and 2 blocks for Warren (0-2), while Kayleigh Glickley tallied 17 assists and 2 aces. Ellie Columbus and Kylie Jasnoch posted 18 and 11 digs, respectively, for the Blue Devils.
Antioch d. Richmond-Burton: Grace Regnier had 7 kills and 6 blocks, and the visiting Sequoits won 25-15, 25-22 in nonconference action.
Maiah Moll dished out 18 assists for Antioch (2-0), whose other contributors included Lexington Mckillips (6 kills, 3 digs, 3 blocks, 3 aces) and Ayanna Tommy (6 kills, 8 digs, 2 aces, 2 blocks).
Huntley d. Carmel: The host Raiders won 25-13, 25-20 to improve to 2-0, while dropping the Corsairs to 1-1.
Annie Bart had 4 kills and 5 digs for Carmel, while Kaitlyn Donton delivered 10 assists. The Corsairs also got 4 kills from Tayah Farris and 7 digs from Sydney Rini.
"Huntley was very fundamentally sound, aggressive in their offense and served well all night," Carmel coach David Pazely said. "In game 1 Carmel was not mentally prepared to compete at the level Huntley was at and we made several errors. Game 2 was a struggle up until a huge rally when we were down 15-6. We gained some confidence in that moment and started to believe in ourselves."
Carmel got within 22-20 but no closer.
"We will learn from this loss," Pazely said, "and be ready for Lake Zurich and Lakes next week."
