Mount Prospect receives Invest in Cook Grant for intersection improvement

The Village of Mount Prospect has been awarded a $460,500 grant from the Cook County Department of Highways Invest in Cook program for the Rand-Central-Mount Prospect Intersection Improvement Project.

The village fully funded Phase I of the project, which included preliminary engineering. The Invest in Cook grant will provide funding to perform Phase II engineering for the project.

This roadway improvement will improve mobility, access and safety for motorists and transit users. The project will also benefit pedestrians and bicyclists with the construction of a shared use path along Rand Road.

Phase II Engineering involves the selection of an engineering firm to design construction plans and acquire right-of-way to accommodate roadway widening. The grant will cover half of the anticipated cost for Phase II Engineering. The village has also applied for federal funding through the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) Program for both Phase II and Phase III Engineering.

Phase III Engineering includes actual construction and engineering observation costs. An announcement on the award of funding for this program is expected in the next couple of months.

Invest in Cook is an $8.5 million program designed to accomplish key strategies of the county's Long-Range Transportation Plan. Grant funds cover the cost of planning and feasibility studies, engineering, right-of-way acquisition and construction associated with transportation improvements sponsored by local and regional governments.

The county received more than 80 applications as part of its 2019 program requesting a total of $42 million in funding. The village was one of 34 applicants to be selected for a grant.
