SRACLC welcomes families to 29th Annual Fishing Derby

Submitted by the Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County

The Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County hosted its 29th Annual Family Day and Fishing Derby July 31.

This family event brings together children and teens from SRACLC's four main summer camps for kids with disabilities, plus another group from their Active Adult program.

Together with their families, they journeyed to Big Bear Lake in Vernon Hills, where nearly 200 people took to the pier and shores for the afternoon of fishing, carnival games, a bounce house, and picnic lunch.

As the fishing came to an end, the anglers calculated that more than 130 fish were caught and released. Then it was time to award trophies for the biggest, smallest, and most fish caught.

Erinn Narris, an Active Adult participant from Lake Zurich, caught the biggest fish. Andrew Koppel, a 20-year-old camper from Lake Zurich, caught the most fish and Filip Kalicanin, a 3-year-old camper from Lincolnshire, caught the smallest fish.

The award ceremony continued with the Staff/Counselors/Volunteers of the Year being awarded to Jon Gonzolas, Liz Reynolds, Bridget Conroy, Emma Kuhnke and Evelyn Leary; and Campers of the Year being awarded to Erinn Narris, Logan Pfeifer, Jason White and Lauren Camp.

The Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County provides community-based, therapeutic recreation services to individuals with special needs and their families.
