Why It Is Important For Seniors To Exercise

Make Exercising Part of Your Routine

Submitted by Vicki Gerson

There are numerous studies that prove the important health benefits associated with exercise. Exercising becomes more important as people age.

"Regular physical activity helps improve your mental and physical health," said Operations Manager Robert Bicanic of the Northbrook-based Senior Helpers office serving the north and northwest suburbs. "If you want to maintain your independence as you age, both are important."

Here are five benefits as to why seniors should exercise.

Improve Mental Health -

Exercising is a good stress reliever and leaves you feeling happy and satisfied. In addition, exercise has been linked to improving sleep, which is especially important for older adults.

Decreased risk of falls -

Older adults are at a higher risk of falls, which can be disastrous for maintaining independence. Exercise can improve strength and flexibility, which improves balance and coordination.

Exercise boosts bone density -

Low bone density can make seniors more susceptible to serious injuries from falls. Regular exercise can strengthen bone density and may even reduce the severity of osteoporosis.

Exercise helps seniors be more social -

Exercising with a friend can be a great way to be motivated and stay active. What you have a support system, you have a positive attitude.

Exercise can improve overall health -

Senior who exercise on a regular basis tend to experience benefits in every aspect of life. The National Institute on Aging recommends the following exercises for improving your overall health:

Endurance (biking, hiking, swimming, aerobics)

Strength training (weights, push-ups, sit-ups)

Stretching (yoga, Pilates, simple repetitive stretches)

Balance ( standing on one foot, placing one foot in front of the other and walking along a line)
