St. Catherine of Siena youth ministry members receive high honor

Eight members of the youth ministry group at St. Catherine of Siena Church in West Dundee were recently awarded the prestigious national 2019 St. Timothy Youth Award.

Recipients of the St. Timothy Award are Sophia Kopacz, Sara Pottorff, Chris Semler, Carson Scarnegie, Mitchell Barrett, Emily Wagh, Felicia Samuels, and Isabelle Reedy.

"These wonderful young men and women live their faith in their daily lives, not just something they put on for Sunday when they come to Church or attend youth group events," said Deacon Hank Schmalen of St. Catherine of Siena Church.

"They are all true Christian leaders in our parish, school and community," added Jessica Cranston, the parish's director of youth ministry. "We are so proud of each one of them."

To receive this honor, candidates must fulfill four important characteristics, including: living as a disciple of Christ and setting a positive example for other youth; witnessing their faith by exhibiting Catholic morals and integrity; demonstrating Gospel values through service to others; and exhibiting Christian leadership in their parish, school and community setting.

As part of the St. Catherine of Siena Church Youth Ministry, all recipients have been involved in a number of projects including annual mission trips of service and participation at "Camp WOW," which challenges youth to allow Jesus' light to shine in and through them.

The St. Timothy Youth Award is a national recognition given to youth by the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, in collaboration with Diocese of Rockford Catholic Education Office. This is the highest recognition given by the national federation for a diocese to confer on a young person.
