Wild Ones chapter offers tour of Salamander Springs May 25

Join Wild Ones of Northern Kane County at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 25, at Salamander Springs, a 100-acre Dundee Township Open Space property in Northern Kane County.

The tour will take you through prairie, pond, wetland and extensive oak and hickory woodland habitats on the rolling glacial terrain.

Years of restoration work by Dundee Township staff and volunteers have helped to restore many areas, making excellent habitat for native plants, birds, reptiles and amphibians.

Steward Jim Cudney, who lives in the old farm house at the property, will be leading the group.

After the tour, there is an opportunity for anyone who can stay to help plant 120 milkweed plants at Salamander Springs; four species of milkweed, provided by a Monarch Watch grant.

For the tour, meet at the main trailhead.

Salamander Springs is located in West Dundee off Binnie Road, one mile west of Randall Road at the north end of Adams Drive (where it dead ends).

A gravel road on the east side at the end of Adams Drive leads to the main trailhead about 100 yards up the gravel road where there is room for 5 or 6 cars to park.

When that fills up, park on Adams Drive, at the end of and along the west side, then walk up to the trailhead.
