Hanover Park man killed in Kennedy Expressway crash

A 27-year-old Hanover Park man was killed and his passenger seriously injured early Sunday when he lost control of his car on the Kennedy Expressway and struck a concrete barrier, police said.

Kevin J. Ness was pronounced dead at a hospital after the crash, which occurred about 2:18 a.m. in the northbound lanes at Lawrence Avenue, according to Illinois State Police.

Passenger Jimmy Ruiz, 26, of Bloomingdale, was hospitalized Sunday in serious condition, state police said.

A preliminary investigation indicated Ness was driving a Toyota sedan northbound when the car veered left, struck the median barrier and overturned, police said. The vehicle then slid across all lanes of traffic and hit another barrier before stopping.

Both men had to be extricated from the vehicle.

All lanes of the Kennedy were shut down for about four hours while police investigated and the road was cleared of debris.

An investigation of the crash remains ongoing, state police said.
