Schaumburg man charged with sexually abusing 23-year-old woman
A Schaumburg man was ordered held on $50,000 bail Friday on charges he sexually abused a 23-year-old California woman he met online.
Amit Kumar Singh, of the 700 block of Crest Avenue, is charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse, a class 2 felony punishable by up to seven years in prison.
Prosecutors say Singh, 46, met the woman two years ago on a social media site after Singh - whose friend works in Hindi cinema - learned the woman was interested in acting.
In December, Singh offered the woman a job with his company, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Ryan DeGroot. He invited her to Schaumburg in January to discuss the job and offered to let her stay in his guest room, DeGroot said.
On Jan. 30, Singh and the woman went out for dinner and drinks. When she returned to Singh's home the woman went to her room and locked the door, DeGroot said. She awoke to Singh unlocking her door, he said.
DeGroot said Singh dragged her to the living room where she noticed a gun on a table. She fought with him, struck him in the face with a bottle and tried to escape, but she was sexually assaulted, DeGroot said.
The woman returned to California and reported the attack to Los Angeles police, DeGroot said.
Cook County Judge Marc Martin ordered Singh to refrain from using the internet except for work. Singh next appears in court on May 30.
