Schuler Scholar Program Celebrates College Signing Day at 10 Chicago Area High Schools

SCHULER SCHOLAR PROGRAM CELEBRATES COLLEGE SIGNING DAY AT 10 CHICAGO AREA HIGH SCHOOLS

LAKE FOREST, IL, April 15, 2019 - Deciding where to go to college is a major life decision. For 118 Schuler Scholars, it's the one they've been working toward since they were freshmen. That's why celebrating this milestone on #CollegeSigningDay - May 1 is a significant part of the Schuler Scholar Program's transition to college.

The program, which supports first generation, low-income students, underrepresented students throughout high school so they can attend a highly-selective liberal arts college, is hosting #CollegeSigningDay celebrations at 10 Chicago-area high schools with Schuler Scholar Program seniors. The events will feature each senior declaring their chosen school by wearing their college shirt and displaying their college pennant. Other Schuler Scholars, parents and school staff are invited to help celebrate and enjoy refreshments.

The Schuler Scholar Program has celebrated the day that seniors decide their college choice since it began in 2001. "We believe a high-quality education transforms lives. We want to celebrate our Scholars as they make their first step toward this transformation. #CollegeSigningDay helps them see they are part of a larger movement toward extending their education beyond high school," said Jason Patenaude, Schuler Scholar Program Executive Director.

The 10 schools where the Schuler Scholar Program will be hosting #CollegeSigningDay celebrations are:

Cristo Rey St. Martin, Highland Park High School, Lindblom Math and Science Academy, Maine East High School, North Chicago High School, Round Lake High School, Richard T. Crane Medical Preparatory High School, Waukegan High School, Warren Township High School, Zion-Benton Township High School.

#College Signing Day began in 2014 as part of the Reach Higher Initiative by Former First Lady Michelle Obama to encourage students to consider education beyond high school. The effort has grown from one event to more than 2,250 events last year.

About Schuler Scholar Program

Inspired, driven, smart, talented. These are the qualities of a student with the potential to create an exceptional future. The Schuler Scholar Program was founded upon a belief in the power of a high-quality education to transform lives, communities, and our nation. With support from Schuler, Scholars design a roadmap, customized to their interests and goals, to highly selective private colleges that offer a liberal arts education.

Our dedicated team of onsite Schuler staff provide individualized academic support for all four years of high school, college counseling, mentorship during college, and an alumni support network for life. We work with high school students who are underrepresented on college campuses, the majority of whom are the first in their families to graduate from college. Beyond academics, Schuler cultivates leadership skills and provides access to new cultural experiences that broaden each Scholar's path forward.

As a result, Scholars attend some of the most selective colleges and universities in the United States. Today, 99 percent of Schuler Scholars complete an undergraduate degree in six years. Alumni Scholars are becoming the leaders of the future. They are doctors, Fulbright Scholars, aeronautical engineers, and teachers. They are improving the quality of life for not only themselves, but the lives of their families and communities. We are proud to help unlock that potential.
