Literacy Volunteers hosts Trivia Bee championship
Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley hosted its annual "Bee Our Guest: Trivia Bee for Literacy" championship on Saturday, March 16, at FONA International in Geneva.
The winning team was "Would You Like Answers With That?," which was sponsored by Nameplate and Panel Technology of Carol Stream. The team included Tom Barrows, Christopher Denault and Suzanne Rubey.
Proceeds from the competition go toward literacy services offered by the nonprofit organization, which was founded in 1986.
Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley equips and empowers adults who are otherwise unable to participate fully in the communities of Batavia, Elburn, Geneva, Campton Township, La Fox, Lily Lake, Wasco, St. Charles and Wayne by providing free instructional services through one-on-one tutoring that focuses on reading, writing and speaking in English.
They would like to thank the Trivia Bee sponsors: FONA International Inc., Strohschein Law Group, Zonta Club of St. Charles-Geneva-Batavia, St. Charles Dental, South Elgin Budokan Martial Arts, RR Donnelly, and Joseph M. Wiedemann and Sons Inc.
Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley will offer a free tutor training workshop for residents who want to help adults understand English and adapt to our community.
The workshop will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 7-16, at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave. Each resident who completes training will be matched with one adult learner. Volunteer tutors and adult learners meet for one hour each week at times and public locations that are convenient.
The workshop provides texts, study material, and training so that anyone can help. Volunteers do not need to know a second language or have a professional teaching background to make a difference. Volunteers get guidance and support when they need it.
Experienced tutors are glad to share what they have learned. From week to week, volunteers see their students get more comfortable and fluent in English and they know they are making a difference in their students' lives. Volunteers also benefit as they see the results of their efforts and broaden their understanding of values and lifestyles other than their own.
