Santana set to make first start for White Sox today
As the first four games of the opening homestand have shown, the White Sox needs some help in the starting rotation.
Reynaldo Lopez, Lucas Giolito, Ivan Nova and Carlos Rodon were all ineffective in their Guaranteed Rate Field debuts.
Tuesday afternoon, Ervin Santana gets his shot. The 36-year-old righty starts against the Tampa Bay Rays.
"We're looking forward to seeing him," Sox manager Rick Renteria said. "He's a veteran who knows exactly what he's doing, how he goes about his business. He knows who he is, understands what he has."
After signing a minor-league deal with the White Sox Feb. 23, Santana had his contract purchased Tuesday.
Santana is a career 149-125 with a 4.06 ERA in 14 major-league seasons with the Angels (2005-12), Royals (2013), Braves (2014) and Twins (2015-18).
An all-star in 2017, Santana was 16-8 with a 3.28 ERA, 5 complete games and 3 shutouts for Minnesota.
Last season, Santana was limited to 5 starts by an injury to his right middle finger. He was 0-1 with an 8.03 ERA.
