Voters approve 1% sales tax hike in Elburn

Elburn voters appear to have narrowly approved a 1 percent sales tax increase.

Unofficial results Tuesday show 136 voters approved the measure, while 128 voters voted against it. Final tallies of votes will take a few weeks to certify as mail-in ballots may still trickle in.

If the results stand, the village's sales tax rate would be 8 percent. This was the second time in recent years the village had sought to increase the sales tax.

Village officials said the increased sales tax revenue would be used for operations, infrastructure and property tax relief.

Shoppers would start paying the tax July 1.
