Lisle monk accused of sexually abusing Benet student 40 years ago
An 80-year-old monk at St. Procopius Abbey in Lisle has been accused of sexually abusing a Benet Academy student roughly 40 years ago, according to abbey officials.
The abbey released a statement saying it learned about the decades-old allegation on March 21.
"In keeping with the abbey's policy, the accusation has been reported to law enforcement," the statement reads.
The monk has been put on leave from ministry and placed under restrictions pending an investigation.
St. Procopius Abbey officials say the abbey has "comprehensive policies in place to prevent the sexual abuse of minors as well as to respond to complaints and to promote healing for victims."
They are encouraging anyone who has been abused to contact civil authorities.
