Fire official says space heater partly to blame for Addison fire
Paper set too close to a space heater appears to have been the cause of a small fire at a single-family Addison residence Saturday, according to a fire department official.
The fire started a little before 10 a.m. on the 100 block of West Marilyn Terrace in what Addison Battalion Chief Chuck Baxa described as a family room or sunroom.
Family members were home at the time, saw the smoke and alerted the fire department, Baxa said.
No one was injured and the damage, the majority of it smoke-related, was confined to that room. The home remains habitable, Baxa said.
"At the time of the fire, there were no working smoke detectors ... which would have made a difference if the fire occurred at night," Baxa said, adding that firefighters installed a few detectors for the family.
In addition to Addison, Elmhurst, York Center, Bensenville, Itasca and Wood Dale fire departments responded to the 911 call.
