Bail set at $750,000 for man charged in Downers Grove overdose
A Maywood man is being held on $750,000 bail in connection with a Downers Grove man's Dec. 15 overdose death.
Gregory Jones, 47, of the 1000 block of South 12th Avenue, is charged with drug-induced homicide in the death of 21-year-old Alexander Zabinski.
A family member found Zabinski at 6 a.m. Dec. 15 with a needle and nylon strand nearby. The family member called for assistance and administered Narcan and started CPR before medics arrived. Zabinski was pronounced dead at 6:50 a.m. at a hospital.
A spoon was located under Zabinski's pillow and a micro baggie containing a powdery substance, later determined to be heroin, was found in his pocket.
Prosecutors said Zabinski traveled to Maywood the previous day and bought five bags of heroin from Jones, which he later ingested.
Jones was arrested Feb. 4 on a warrant.
"In the first two months of 2019, DuPage County has confirmed five deaths as a result of opioid overdoses," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a written statement. "This senseless loss of life has to stop and one way to stop is to cut the supply line. A dealer may think twice about selling this poison knowing that they will be looking at a significant amount of time behind bars if they are the proven source of a fatal overdose."
Jones' next court appearance is scheduled for March 25 in front of Judge Robert Miller.
