Wheaton Sport Center celebrates 40th anniversary

Wheaton Sport Center marks its 40th anniversary of operating this month as apart of daily living for some DuPage County residents.

Still under original ownership of the Benson family, the club opened in February 1979 as a racquet and health club facility. Over the past 40 years, the center has added new features to meet the needs of its membership and the health trends of the times to remain the pre-eminent health club in the area, currently housing 14 tennis courts, two swim pools, hot yoga studio, 150-plus weekly group exercise classes, a state-of-the-art fitness floor, child care, spa and more.

In 1979, the club's original focus emphasized racquetball and tennis and included a pool and an area for weights and general exercise. The club also hosted special events throughout the year.

As fitness trends have changed over the 40 years, so, too, has the club evolved to feature those trends and make the most current movements in health available to its members.

The racquetball courts have been transformed into several group exercise studios, an expanded fitness floor with more than 115 cardio machines and the latest strength training equipment.

Wheaton Sport Center also has added a hot yoga studio and offers spin and barre classes and Pilates reformer, which are some of the latest group exercise fitness trends.

While its main mission is to maximize health and fitness, the center also become a place for families to spend time together. It still retains more than 50 original members enrolled in the club, with many of them now working out beside second and third generations of members from the same family.

The center continues to emphasize exercise as part of daily living by adding a child care facility, a second pool with a slide for recreational use, programs for both young and old and events throughout the year to celebrate holidays, special occasions and fundraisers.

The center is at 1000 W. Prairie Ave. For details, visit wheatonsportcenter.com.
