Jail, probation for Streamwood woman who attacked Carpentersville man

A 42-year-old Streamwood woman was sentenced to two years' probation after pleading guilty to a lesser charge from a November 2018 attack in which she was accused of forcing her way into a Carpentersville apartment and stabbing a man in his hand.

Shanetta R. Johnson, of the 4000 block of Club Tree Drive, also served 70 days at the Kane County jail while held on $75,000 bail while the case was pending.

Johnson was charged with two counts of home invasion, two counts of aggravated domestic battery and trespassing, all felonies, after Carpentersville police said she showed up at an apartment on the 0-99 block of Oak Crest Drive about 1 a.m. Nov. 15.

Police said Johnson argued with a 45-year-old man who was at a female friend's apartment. While armed with a knife, Johnson forced her way inside, and cut the man in the hand in the process, police said.

Johnson also was charged with three misdemeanors - two more counts of domestic battery and one count of unlawful use of a weapon - according to Carpentersville police and Kane County court records.

Defense attorneys argued to have her bail reduced to $50,000, meaning she would have to post $5,000 to be released, but she remained in custody. She also was ordered to undergo an evaluation at the Kane County Diagnostic Center, according to court records, although it was unclear whether that was completed.

Had the case gone to trial, Johnson faced six to 30 years in prison if convicted of the most severe charge of home invasion.

Instead, she pleaded guilty last week to the lesser charge of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm in exchange for prosecutors' dismissing the other charges.

If Johnson violates her probation, she could be resentenced to up to five years in prison.
