Bears shore up Trubisky's wall

The Bears made a major move toward preserving the continuity of their offensive line Saturday by re-signing RT Bobby Massie to a four-year contract extension through 2022.

The 6-foot-6, 317-pound Massie, a seven-year veteran, was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on March 14. Massie has started 46 of 48 regular-season games in his three years with the Bears and will remain as part of a unit that allowed QB Mitch Trubisky to be sacked just 24 times in 14 starts last season. The Bears were 10th in the NFL last year in fewest sacks allowed.

"Bobby has been an important part of our offensive line the past three years and has shown steady improvement during that time," Bears G.M. Ryan Pace said. "Bobby has a tremendous work ethic and has displayed the kind of toughness and consistency we want in our players. More importantly, he is a great teammate and we're excited to keep him in the fold."

With Massie back, the Bears' O-line should remain unchanged from last year, with RG Kyle Long, C Cody Whitehair, LG James Daniels and LT Charles Leno. Massie was the only starter on the offensive side of the ball not under contract for next year.

Behind Massie and the offensive line, Bears QBs Trubisky and Chase Daniel set a franchise single-season record in 2018 with a 67.2 completion percentage, while the Bears' offense averaged 26.3 points per game, fourth best in the NFC, and scored 24 or more points 11 times, the most since 1995.

Two of the Bears' key defensive players are also eligible for unrestricted free agency: starting S Adrian Amos and nickel CB Bryce Callahan. Both would be welcomed back to a unit that allowed the fewest points in the NFL, but both could attract interest around the league.

Amos has started 56 games in four years since the Bears drafted him in the fifth round out of Penn State in 2015. Callahan, signed by the Bears as an undrafted rookie in 2015, enjoyed the best season of his career in 2018, when he started 10 games before a season-ending foot injury. He was 10th on the team with 45 tackles, had two interceptions, two sacks, six pass breakups and six tackles for loss.
