New trustee named in Island Lake

A candidate for a seat on Island Lake's village board has been appointed to fill a vacancy on that six-member panel.

Will Ziegler, a member of the village's planning and zoning commission since 2017, was named the village's newest trustee Thursday night. His appointment by Mayor Charles Amrich was unanimously approved by the village board.

Ziegler succeeds Sandy Doehler, who announced her intent to quit at the Dec. 20 board meeting after a heated disagreement with Amrich and other officials. Doehler formally resigned last week.

The blowup at the Dec. 20 meeting was the latest conflict between Doehler and other village leaders. It concerned a dispute between Doehler and a fellow board member that goes back to September, village records indicate.

Ziegler will finish Doehler's term, which was to end in April. No one else was considered for the post, Village Clerk Georgine Cooper said.

Ziegler said he moved to Island Lake about three years ago and began attending board meetings and community events and meeting fellow residents.

He said he sought a seat on the village board because "it's something that I wanted to be part of."

Trustee Mark Beeson said he expects Ziegler will be a "wonderful" board member.

"He's really interested in the forward movement of our town," Beeson said.

Ziegler is one of three candidates for three board seats in the April 2 municipal election.

The others are former police chief and former trustee Anthony Sciarrone and Richard McLaughlin, who serves on the village's fire and police commission.
