Without McCann, Willowbrook can't keep up with Marist

Willowbrook is learning how to play without injured senior Katelyn McCann, but Marist is not a team you want to play when you're trying to adjust.

The RedHawks defeated host Willowbrook 70-45 Saturday afternoon at the 29th annual Coach Kipp's Hoopsfest. Willowbrook originally was scheduled to play Brooks in the first game of the day, but Brooks backed out Friday.

Though McCann - who tore her left ACL, MCL, PCL and meniscus last week against Proviso East and will miss the rest of the season - is the Warriors' leading scorer, her absence was felt most on defense.

"Today we had to fill a hole, we had to fill the two-guard hole," Warriors coach Terry Harrell said. "Which is hard for us, because we do have a lot of guards. We just don't have a lot of quick guards. Honestly, what we do, our defensive scheme is built on being quick, and we weren't quick enough today. So it does hurt not to have Katelyn."

The Warriors (18-8) looked like they had it figured out on offense in the first quarter when the lead changed hands nine times. Marist led 21-17 after one period, but the second belonged to the RedHawks. They outscored Willowbrook 23-2, taking advantage of the Warriors' new lack of depth.

"I could look on the court and see we were tired, but I couldn't spell the people the way I wanted to spell them because it wasn't going to help us as a team," Harrell said. "So I left them out there and they just got tired."

Sophomore guard Grace Tumilty led the Warriors with 16 points, and junior K'aliyah Herron added 11. Sophomore post Stephanie Dasbach grabbed 13 rebounds as well as scoring 6 points.

"Herron did what Herron does. She ran around and got steals and got layups," Harrell said. "But we didn't have the rest of that recipe today. Everybody else didn't quite step up to that level, which turned into that score. Which we are not used to."

Jenna Ryan's 18 points paced Marist (16-7).
