Elburn police: Teen who escaped custody charged with felonies

A teenager in custody at the Elburn Police Department escaped for several hours in late December before he was relocated and arrested, authorities said Wednesday.

Elburn police reported finding a stolen credit card in the possession of a 17-year-old boy on Dec. 20, according to a news release. He was being held in non-secure custody while a police officer worked with the Kane County state's attorney's office to secure felony charges, authorities said.

While the officer was in another room, the teenager escaped about 6 p.m. by crawling out of a window, police said. He was relocated and taken back into custody about 11 p.m., police said.

He was later transferred to the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center on charges of burglary to a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property and escape.

The police department is conducting an internal investigation of the circumstances leading to the escape, authorities said.
