3 and out: Breaking down the Bears' season-ending loss to the Eagles

Breaking down the Bears' season-ending 16-15 loss to the Eagles on Sunday at Soldier Field.

Three moments that mattered:

1. How many times in this very space did we ask how the Bears could feel comfortable with Cody Parkey in a big game? It's actually fitting that the Bears season ended with Parkey clanging one off the upright.

2. Of course, the Bears wouldn't have needed Parkey if the defense would have come up with a stop on fourth-and-goal. Instead, Golden Tate beat Bears nickelback Sherrick McManis in one-on-one coverage for the game-winning 2-yard touchdown.

3. Anthony Miller came down with a huge catch inside the Eagles 10-yard line late in the first half. Well, sort of. Replay confirmed Miller did make the catch and fumbled, but since there was no clear recovery by either team, it was incomplete. The NFL rulebook really is full of odd quirks. The Bears settled for a field goal before halftime.

Three things that worked:

1. Mitch Trubisky in big situations. The second-year quarterback certainly didn't play a flawless game. In fact, he should have been picked off three times in the first half. But Trubisky put the Bears in position to win twice in the second half, hitting Allen Robinson for the go-ahead touchdown and then getting his team into field goal range on the final drive.

2. Shutting down Philadelphia's ground game. We're actually a bit surprised the Eagles even bothered to attempt 23 run plays considering how quickly it was apparent they weren't going to win inside against Akiem Hicks and Eddie Goldman. The Eagles finished with 42 yards rushing.

3. Bottling up Zach Ertz. Shutting down tight ends was a specialty of the Bears defense all season. It's why Vic Fangio's unit boasted one of the top red zone defenses in the NFL. Fangio did a terrific job again Sunday taking away Ertz.

Three things that didn't:

1. Special teams. We thought this one was destined for the section above after Parkey made his first three field goal attempts and punter Pat O'Donnell turned in a fantastic first half. Doink.

2. Converting in the red zone. The Bears finished sixth in the NFL during the regular season in red zone efficiency. They started Sunday 0 for 3. Sure, Trubisky got the offense moving late, but the offense left too many points on the field early in the game.

3. Third-quarter penalties. The Bears played a clean first half, but then committed three penalties on the same drive in the third quarter that resulted in 53 yards worth of penalties and ended with Dallas Goeddert's TD to put the Eagles up 10-6.
