Be a literacy volunteer for adult students

Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley is hosting a four-session tutor training for residents who want to help adults speak English. The workshop will meet from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, Jan. 21-30, at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave.

The workshop provides texts, study material, and training so that anyone can be a volunteer. You do not need to know a second language or have a professional teaching background to make a difference.

You will get guidance and support when you need it. Experienced tutors are glad to share what they have learned.

A trained volunteer meets with one adult student for one hour each week. Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley arranges convenient, comfortable, and safe public locations for tutoring. If you can spare one hour each week, we can fit tutoring into your schedule.

From week to week, you will see your student get more comfortable and fluent in English and you will know you are making a difference in his or her life. You also will benefit as you see the direct results of your volunteer efforts and broaden your understanding of values and lifestyles different from your own.
