League to host 'Community Conversation' on immigration Nov. 8

Is America still open to "your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free"?

The League of Women Voters of Central Kane County will sponsor a "Community Conversation" titled "Immigration: Where We have Been and Where We are Going" at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at the St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. Sixth Ave.

Fred Tsao, Senior Policy Counsel of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, will address the issues. He will consider how the federal administration has accelerated the pace of immigration enforcement and has imposed further policies restricting new immigrants and refugees, including the Muslim ban, jailing children, and slashing refugee admissions. The "Conversation" also will address what will likely happen when the new Congress and General Assembly take office and how we can work for humane immigration policies.

The son of immigrants from China, Tsao earned a law degree from the University of Michigan. In the past, he worked for Prairie State Legal Services, which offers free legal services to people with serious civil legal programs. Currently, he assists with advocacy efforts regarding immigration legislation, and he provides technical support and training on immigration-related topics to service providers, immigrant community organizations and others who work with immigrants.
