Montini defense earns fourth shutout

For a defense, getting a shutout is the ultimate goal, and the only thing better would be to have the defenders do some scoring of their own while registering a goose-egg for the opponent.

Sunday at Triton College, Montini recorded its fourth shutout of the season. The defense also jump-started the day's scoring when sophomore DiAndre Harris grabbed a tipped pass and went 27 yards the other way for a 7-0 lead on host Fenwick (2-5). It was one of three interceptions on the day as the Broncos improved to 7-0 on the year with a 42-0 defeat of the Friars.

"Our defense has done a tremendous job," the speedy Harris said. "Coach Bu (Mike Bukovsky) is a great defensive coach. We always practice tip drills and Coach always keeps us on our toes. So when they threw that pass it was just natural. I caught it, my team blocked for me like they always do, and we scored a touchdown.

"I saw Scott (West) … He's a great guy, by the way. I saw Scott and a parade of Broncos in front of me."

The Broncos offense didn't start as fast as the defense did - punting and turning the ball over on downs on two early drives - but after Harris' pick-6, the offense followed suit. First quarterback Deontay Bell raced to a 67-yard touchdown run, then fellow quarterback Robert Brazziel hit West for the first of his three touchdown passes for a 21-0 lead at the half.

Following an unsuccessful onside kick by the Friars to start the second half, Montini added three third-quarter scores to make it a 42-0 game with a running clock.

"I don't know how many of those we've had, but I think we've had a handful," Broncos head coach Mike Bukovsky said of his team's defensive touchdowns. "We've had pick-6s, we've had safeties. We've made more of an effort this year to get more of our difference-making athletes on the field defensively, and I think that has paid off for us."

Harris, a reserve running back, has played well in the secondary this year. West, the team's Swiss Army knife of a player, also excels on both sides of the ball, and also was 6-for-6 kicking PATs.

In the win over the Friars, West made a big block on the interception return by Harris, helped blank the opposition on one side of the ball, and added a pair of touchdown catches from Brazziel to go along with his kicking duties.

While the weather postponement that switched the game from Friday night to Sunday afternoon may have hurt the turnout somewhat, West was happy to play on a Sunday.

"We were really excited (Friday) because it's always fun playing Fenwick," he said. "We thought it was going to be Saturday and then Coach tells us it's going to be a Sunday game. I never played on Sunday, but it was a lot of fun."

Broncos running back Nick Fedanzo capped off the scoring with a 71-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. He finished the day with 159 yards on 15 carries.
