Schaumburg Celebrates 35th Sister Cities Anniversary with Germany by Hosting German Visitors

The Village of Schaumburg will host a group of six German visitors from September 21 through October 1 as part of the village's Sister Cities Exchange, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary with Germany this year.

The German visitors will stay with host families who have graciously offered to share their homes as part of the program. Visitors include Martina Luhnau (Schaumburg German-American Society Treasurer), Anja Horn (Schaumburg German-American Society Vice President), Kerstin Lange (journalist), Karsten Becker (state legislator), Jürgen Watermann (Schaumburg German-American Society President) and Lisa Waterman (Schaumburg German-American Society member).

Some of their activities will include tours of the various village departments, the Schaumburg community, St. Peter Lutheran Church and School as well as a visit to the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel & Convention Center to view the Friendship Stone, Schaumburg Township District Library, Schaumburg Regional Airport (tour provided by Northwest Flyers), Spring Valley/Volkening Heritage Farm, and the Trickster Gallery. A special 35th Anniversary performance at the Al Larson Prairie Center for the Arts and reception will conclude their visit.

"The village is very grateful to all those who have supported, hosted, and offered complimentary or discounted meals for these exchanges, including Pilot Pete's, El Meson, Bonefish Grill, and Lou Malnati's," said Kathleen Tempesta, Schaumburg's Director of Community Services.

"Because of this continued community support, these visitors will be able to experience the very best that the village has to offer."

During 2018, the village is celebrating its 35th anniversary as a Sister Cities partner with Germany. The village became a Sister City with Schaumburg, Germany, to connect its residents with the village's heritage since many of the original settlers were from that area in Germany. The County of Schaumburg, Germany, is a region encompassing approximately 213 square miles and is home to more than 165,000 residents. The region is part of the state of Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany.
