Elgin church to host play on Hiroshima
Tatsushi Amano will perform the one-person play "Living with Father: Do You Know What Happened in Hiroshima 73 Years Ago?" at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren, 783 W. Highland Ave., Elgin.
Amano is a member of a four-person PAX team visiting the Midwest from Hiroshima, Japan. The group is being hosted by Brethren Volunteer Service, a full-time volunteer service program of the Church of the Brethren, headquartered in Elgin.
Brethren Volunteer Service sends volunteers to the World Friendship Center in Hiroshima and is working with the WFC to host the PAX team.
Every few years, a PAX team from Japan visits the United States and a team from the United States visits Hiroshima.
Some members of the PAX team have personal family members who were affected by the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945.
The World Friendship Center hosts visitors to the Hiroshima Memorial Peace Park and supports the work for peace in the world. The center also supports the efforts of the city of Hiroshima to abolish all nuclear weapons.
