YMCA Demonstrates Readiness for Energy Emergency

Continuing an eight-year record of success, the North Suburban YMCA demonstrated its ability to shed power in the event of a large-scale electrical grid emergency. In a Demand Response test conducted by EnerNOC on August 22, the Y drastically reduced its power usage for a test period of an hour and 45 minutes. The test maintains the Y's important role in a proactive community emergency plan, and also provides a valuable stipend to support the non-profit organization's operation.

The Y's participation in the EnerNOC Demand Response Program reflects a socially responsible commitment to address the country's ever-growing energy demands, and to provide a contingency plan for the community in case of emergency. EnerNOC partners with local organizations that pledge to power down on demand in emergencies, helping to prevent brownouts and protect local electrical grids.

On August 22 from 2:15 to 4:00pm, the YMCA turned off all its electrical operations except phones, computers, and security functions. The test showed a 102% reduction in electrical use, confirming the Y's eligibility for the program for the eighth year. EnerNOC compensated the Y with a stipend of $13,000, funds that will support the Y's ongoing programs and facility maintenance.

"Our ongoing partnership with EnerNOC reflects our Y's dedication to social responsibility," noted Howard Schultz, NSYMCA President/CEO. "We are proud to participate in this concerted effort to plan for emergencies and help prevent brownouts and blackouts. We appreciate the cooperation of our members on testing day; their willingness to accommodate a minor inconvenience enables us to help the whole community in the long run."
