Girls volleyball: Hersey fourth at Summer's End

Playing in its first tournament of the 2018 season, Hersey's girls volleyball team took fourth place at the annual Summer's End event on Saturday at New Trier High School.

The Huskies won their three matches of pool play in two sets over Glenbrook South, Maine West and Zion Benton before falling to Loyola in a three-set semifinal and to Glenbrook North in three sets for third place.

Kaiya Eshoo led the Huskies (5-3) with 9 aces in the tourney while top attackers were Kati Kaburov (44 kills), Nora Zielke (26) Juliette Van Den Herik (18) and Alessia Olhava (17).

Olhva also handed out 55 assists while Eshoo had 46.

Van Den Herik (12) and Janine Boyan (10) led in blocks while Maddie Mullin collected a team-high 36 digs.

"It was a great early-season tourney for our young team," said Hersey coach Nancy Lill. "We played some strong competition and although we dropped some close matches in the championship bracket (the Huskies had match point on Loyola), we improved as a team."

Maine West went 2-3 and placed 11th in the 16-team tourney, finishing with a 21-25, 25-16, 25-17 win over Wheeling.

Top performers for the Warriors were Ally Block (60 assists, 29 digs, 9 kills, 8 aces), Reilly Olson (33 kills, 21 digs), Krysta Block (16 kills, 13 digs), Sam Parcell (13 kills, 7 blocks), Ellie Centella (11 kills, 8 blocks), Yesenia Santiago (6 kills, 3 blocks, 8 digs) and Kaylin Johnson (48 digs, 5 aces).

Wheeling (4-7) went 1-4 in the tourney and took 12th place.

Leading the Wildcats on attack were Nicole Nguyen (18 kills), Grace Zambrano (17), Rugile Jaciunas (14), Ellie Welter (13) and Emily LaCaeyse (10).

Zambrano also collected 55 assists and served 6 aces while Nguyen led with 30 digs followed by Johana Veloso (23).

Scholten Classic: Palatine (3-3) compiled a 3-2 record and took ninth place as Haley Holz (41 kills), Emily Campe (32), Karina Szafraniec (7) and Sarah Elischer (7) led the attack.

Allison Drake collected 90 assists in the tourney while Jillian Smith led with 40 digs.

Rolling Meadows (3-5) went 2-3 and took tenth place.

Elise Kowalski served 10 aces and Natalie Klancnik produced 8 for the Mustangs, who were led on attack by Eleanor Errico (33 kills), Ashlyn Ryan (32 kills), Kowalski (26), Leticia Avellaneda (16).

Natalie Klancnik was 220-of-222 setting for 83 assists and Avellaneda led with 9 blocks.

Sophia Salemi led the back row with 35 digs.

Schaumburg took 13th followed by Elk Grove (14th), Hoffman Estates (15th) and the Conant junior varsity (16th).

Jacobs Invite: Barrington defeated Wheaton North 25-18, 25-20 to take seventh place and raise it overall record to 3-3. Libero Mia Ruffalo and outside hitter Peyton Tilly were named to the all-tourney team.
