Coroner identifies victims in fatal Waukegan DUI crash

The Lake County coroner identified the two people killed Sunday night in a collision with a 39-year-old Waukegan woman who authorities say was driving drunk.

Jose Socorro Arroyo-Zavala, 42, from Waukegan, and Laura Orozco Corona, 41, from Guanajuato, Mexico, died in the crash, according to a news release issued Wednesday by Coroner Howard Cooper.

"The preliminary autopsy results indicate they both died as a result multiple traumatic injuries caused by the crash," Cooper said.

Cooper said contrary to what authorities originally thought, the two victims were not married.

Arroyo-Zavala and Corona were killed when Letitia C. Delgadillo of Waukegan drove her 2004 Chevy TrailBlazer through a red light on westbound Grand Avenue at Baldwin Avenue in Waukegan and collided with their Honda Accord at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.

The Honda then slammed into a 2018 Ford Explorer and the Trailblazer hit a 2001 Chevy Tahoe, authorities said. Both vehicles were sitting at the red light facing east on Grand Avenue. Two people in the Ford Explorer and four people in the Tahoe were uninjured.

Delgadillo was driving with a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal threshold, authorities said.

Delgadillo is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal transportation of alcohol, aggravated DUI resulting in death, and failure to yield to a traffic control signal.

"This was truly an avoidable tragedy," Cooper said. "We urge everyone to refrain from driving when they've been drinking. In this day and age, we have so many ways to get home safely. Please phone a friend, call a taxi, or use a ride share service. There is never a reason to drink and drive."

Delgadillo remains in the Lake County jail on $1 million bail and is due back in court Aug. 31.
