Police: Waukegan woman was drunk when causing crash that killed 2

A 39-year-old woman is facing charges alleging she was driving drunk when involved in a crash Sunday night that killed a married couple from Waukegan, authorities said.

Letisia C. Delgadillo of Waukegan had a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal threshold when she drove her 2004 Chevy TrailBlazer through a red light on westbound Grand Avenue at Baldwin Avenue in Waukegan and collided with a Honda Accord at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, authorities said.

After the impact, the Honda slammed into a 2018 Ford Explorer and the Trailblazer hit a 2001 Chevy Tahoe, authorities said. Both vehicles were sitting at the red light facing east on Grand Avenue.

The married couple - the 42-year-old male driver of the Honda and his 41-year-old female passenger - were taken to a hospital, where they later died. Their identifications are being withheld until family notifications and autopsies have been completed. Authorities said they were wearing seat belts.

Delgadillo was taken from the scene of the crash to a hospital, where she was treated and then released into the custody of Waukegan police.

Two people in the Ford Explorer and four people in the Tahoe were uninjured.

Delgadillo is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal transportation of alcohol, aggravated DUI resulting in death, and failure to yield to a traffic control signal.

She remains in the Lake County jail on $1 million bail and is due back in court Aug. 31.
