Mt. Prospect intruder gets 20 years
A Mount Prospect man who prosecutors say broke into a neighbor's apartment and attacked a woman was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Luis Del Peral-Velazco, 30, received the sentence Tuesday in exchange for pleading guilty to home invasion, a felony punishable by up to 30 years in prison.
Prosecutors say the woman awoke about 3 a.m. Feb. 11, 2017, to find Del Peral-Velazco on top of her, striking her head, cutting off her airway and attempting to sexually assault her. The woman broke free, scratched him and screamed as he fled the room, prosecutors said.
Police said they encountered him minutes later walking outside the building wearing bloodstained clothes with fresh scratches on his face.
Del Peral-Velazco received credit for 531 days in custody. He was also ordered to pay $674 in fines.
