Chicago White Sox quiet at trade deadline

Leading up to Tuesday afternoon's nonwaiver trade deadline, Chicago White Sox general manager Rick Hahn was consistent with his expectations.

"People know where we're at," Hahn said. "Although we've done the lion's share of the talent accumulation portion of this rebuild, we're still very much on the lookout for opportunities to add to that group."

The Sox did acquire another prospect before Tuesday's deadline, sending international signing bonus pool money to the Tampa Bay Rays for minor-league pitcher Hunter Schryver.

Last Thursday, the White Sox traded Joakim Soria to the Milwaukee Brewers for minor-league lefty Kodi Medeiros and righty Wilber Perez.

The Brewers' first-round draft pick (No. 12 overall) in 2014, Medeiros made his first start in the Sox's organization Tuesday night, pitching for Class AA Birmingham.

On Sunday, the Sox acquired left-handed relief prospect Caleb Frare from the New York Yankees for international signing money.

The left-handed Schryver, 23, was a combined 1-3 with a 2.40 ERA and 9 saves this season with Class A Bowling Green and A Charlotte.

Add it all up and it's nothing close to the haul Hahn got before the deadline last summer, headed by Eloy Jimenez and Dylan Cease from the Cubs for Jose Quintana and Blake Rutherford from the Yankees for David Robertson, Todd Frazier and Tommy Kahnle.

But like the Sox's GM said, most veterans with trade value are long gone.

Jose Abreu and Avisail Garcia are still on the roster, and they are both under contract through the 2019 season.

There is plenty of time to trade one or both players, but the White Sox also seem open to continue mixing in younger players around Abreu and Garcia.

They also could move veteran starter James Shields and relief pitchers Luis Avilan and Xavier Cedeno in August.

The Schryver trade aside, White Sox manager Rick Renteria was almost expecting Tuesday to be quiet.

"I didn't anticipate that anything else was going to be occurring at this particular time," he said. "But there's always surprises and you deal with them when you reach that point. For us, nothing new today so we just keep moving forward."
