$2.15 million settlement in 2015 motorcycle accident suit

On the eve of trial, attorneys for both parties in a June 2015 Elmhurst-area motorcycle crash agreed to a $2.15 million settlement for a University Park man who suffered a permanent brain injury.

According to the original complaint filed in August 2015, Wyatt Williams, 38, was driving his 1986 Honda CN250 Helix motorcycle west on North Avenue near Maple Street in Oak Brook when Leslie Mueller turned north onto Maple from westbound North Avenue in Elmhurst and collided with the front of Williams' motorcycle. Williams' attorney said he was wearing a full face helmet at the time.

Mueller, now 37, of Glendale Heights, was cited with local ordinances for failing to yield while turning left and not having a valid license or permit.

Williams was treated at Elmhurst Hospital for broken ribs, a torn ligament in his knee, and a head injury.

Since the crash, his attorneys say Williams has experienced chronic pain and a moderate, permanent traumatic brain injury that causes him anxiety and difficulty concentrating and controlling his emotions. As a result, he has had trouble maintaining a job.

On July 11, less than a week before the case was scheduled to go to trial, attorneys settled the case for $2.15 million.

"Wyatt was a total victim in this case. The defense admitted negligence after fact discovery, but continued to dispute the extent of his injuries, especially the wage loss claim related to his moderate brain injury," said Williams' attorney, Brian L. Salvi, in a written statement. "Wyatt has been a fighter the last three years and it was an honor to represent him. I'm so happy Wyatt got the justice he deserved and a level of financial security that will allow he and his family to move forward."
