Plan to rename North Chicago street to honor Audrey Nixon

North Chicago officials held a ceremony Tuesday to honor the late Lake County Board member Audrey Nixon on what would have been her 83rd birthday.

Plans are in the works to rename 14th Street after Nixon. North Chicago officials say "Audrey Nixon Boulevard" could become a reality after Lake County assumes jurisdiction of the street in 2020.

North Chicago, Lake County and Waukegan each control parts of the roadway.

Some of Nixon's relatives attended Tuesday's ceremony, as did North Chicago Mayor Leon Rockingham Jr. and other elected officials.

Nixon, a North Chicago Democrat, died last year.
