Make history at Heritage Farm Drop-in Thursdays

Add some hands-on fun-1880s style- to your Thursdays at Schaumburg Park District's Volkening Heritage Farm.

Drop in Thursdays take place throughout the summer at the farm, 201 S. Plum Grove Road. Activities include making crafts, churning butter and sampling homemade ice cream.

"Drop-in days are a great way for children to experience history and make something to take home," said Patty Kennedy, farm program coordinator. "The activities demonstrate tasks and chores we don't need to do because of modern technology. It's cool to see something like milk turning into ice cream."

Upcoming Drop-in Thursdays include:

• Rope Making, June 28-See how important rope was in the 19th century and make your own.

• Better with Butter, July 5-Help the house frau churn butter and try making some yourself. Bread and crackers will be available for tasting.

• Leather Works, July 26-Visit with a local craftsman to see all the uses for leather on the farm. Afterward, make a leather bracelet or other creation to take home.

• Sundae School, Aug. 16 Participants will learn to make ice cream from scratch and enjoy their own sundaes.

Programs take place between 10 a.m. and noon. Cost is $2 per person.
