Winfield police say son killed parents in homicide-suicide case

Authorities said Tuesday that Nancy and Clyde Clinkenbeard, who were found dead in their Winfield home last Monday, were killed by their adult son Karl Clinkenbeard, who then killed himself.

Karl's deadly attack happened sometime between noon and 1:15 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, at the couple's home on the 500 block of Jefferson Street, according to a news release issued by Winfield Police.

Several people interviewed by investigators said Karl, 50, most likely attacked Nancy, 77, and Clyde, 76, because they intended to remove him from their home.

Winfield police also said that on Saturday, May 19, the day before they believe Karl killed his parents, police officers were called to the home because Karl and another family member were arguing. Police said the family member Karl argued with on May 19 was not in the area of the Clinkenbeard's home on May 20.

The three bodies were discovered by neighbors last Monday.

Katie Earls, the Clinkenbeards' next-door neighbor, said her husband went to check on the couple Monday morning because one of the their two dogs was waiting unattended outside the ranch home on Jefferson Street just south of Manchester Road.

She said her husband, Harry, looked in the kitchen window and, when he saw the father and adult son lying on the floor, had his wife immediately call 911.
