Freight cars derail in Aurora
Several cars of an eastbound freight train derailed around 2:30 p.m. Thursday near River and Third streets in Aurora.
No injuries have been reported, but officials say Aurora Animal Care and Control and a business on the 600 block of South River Street were evacuated.
Authorities said on the Aurora Police Department Facebook page Thursday that BNSF Railway took command of the scene about one hour after the derailment on the overpass.
Because there were no hazardous materials, BNSF did not deploy a hazardous materials team, authorities said.
The derailment caused several train rails to buckle which may take days to repair.
The evacuations have been lifted, though motorists are encouraged to avoid the area.
The Aurora Fire Department was released from the scene while the Aurora Police Department continued to handle necessary road closures.
