Suburban men charged in ruse burglary of 87-year-old Barrington Hills resident
Illinois State Police say they thwarted the ruse burglary of an 87-year-old Barrington Hills woman while conducting surveillance of five suburban suspects under investigation for stealing $60,000 from a different senior homeowner.
The five men went to the woman's house last Monday, rang her doorbell and lured her outside, state police said. When she went to her backyard to view landscaping with some of the suspects, the others broke into her home and entered her bedroom, police said.
The woman became suspicious and asked the crew to leave when they questioned whether anyone else was home, police said. As she started to call 911, the woman saw two men running from her bedroom and out the front door, police said.
At the same time, members of the state police's Ruse Burglary Task Force and other law enforcement agencies had the men under surveillance in connection with an investigation the theft of $60,000 from an 82-year-old victim in a similar burglary, police said.
As task force officers went to the home to prevent the burglary from happening, they saw the suspects fleeing the front door and running from the backyard. The officers arrested all five suspects on burglary charges.
