Schaumburg Youth Symphony Orchestra Presents Spring Concert May 13
The Schaumburg Youth Symphony Orchestra Spring Concert will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 13, at the Al Larson Prairie Center for the Arts. Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for individuals age 18 and under if purchased in advance ($9 and $5 at the door).
Soloist Walter Preucil will be performing the Dvorak Cello Concerto. Preucil has been a Schaumburg resident and member of the Lyric Opera of Chicago orchestra since 1988. He was Principal Cellist of Lyric for the 2013-2014 season and has also played with The Grant Park Festival Orchestra, the Ravinia Festival Orchestra and the Chicago Philharmonic.
"The cello concerto is great music that features the cello for its best means of expression, which is why we are playing it," said Director Joseph Malmquist. "Every player is a part of the larger tapestry, and given beautiful and rewarding passages to contribute. Our honored soloist is the type of player that can play those empty flourishes to showcase himself, but is more about the intrinsic beauty of the music," Malmquist said.
In addition to the Dvorak Cello Concerto, the orchestra will perform two works by Leonard Bernstein, commemorating the 100th anniversary of his birth.
"Bernstein's impact on the world of music cannot be exaggerated," Malmquist said. "A composer of Broadway, jazz, and phenomenally complex orchestral and choral works, Bernstein was at ease reducing the mystique while sharing the rich diversity and complexity of music," he said.
The program concludes with Capriccio Espagnol by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakoff.
Joseph Malmquist has served as the Director of the Schaumburg Youth Symphony Orchestra since its founding in 1989, overseeing its growth from 16 players to an organization of nearly 200 student musicians in four ensembles. He is a recipient of the American String Teachers Association Distinguished Service Award and in 2014 was named the Illinois Council of Orchestras' Youth Orchestra Conductor of the Year.
Schaumburg Youth Orchestra is a program of the Village of Schaumburg. The mission of the Schaumburg Youth Orchestra is to promote the continuing growth of the cultural arts in the community by providing area students with an outlet to perform challenging ensemble and orchestral music, and by presenting youth orchestra performances to the community and outlying areas through concerts, recordings and tours.
