Food, Fun and Folklore Planned for Annual Northbrook Celebration of Cultures on May 6
The Northbrook Community Relations Commission will present its third annual Celebration of Cultures on Sunday, May 6 at the North Suburban YMCA. This exciting festival offers entertainment, food, and displays representing the diverse cultural heritage of local residents. The celebration runs from noon to 4:00 pm at the Y, located at 2705 Techny Road in Northbrook.
This year's celebration includes new groups and vendors to engage participants of all ages. Sports enthusiasts will have the chance to learn about the internationally-beloved game of cricket with a demonstration game by the Greater Chicago Cricket Association at 1:00pm. At 2:00pm, the Chicago Folklore Ensemble will perform their original show "Follow the Butterfly," featuring music and stories from Amazonia, Appalachia, India, Nigeria, and Thailand. A special Korean cultural station with children's activities and book fair will open at noon in the YMCA's ABC room and feature a Korean story time at 12:30 p.m.
Throughout the afternoon, food trucks 5411 and Bombay Wraps will be selling Argentinian empanadas and Indian wrap sandwiches. Beginning at 1:00, booths representing Mexican, Indian, Persian, Russian, Venezuelan and other heritage groups will share free samples of traditional snacks and sweets. Artifacts, art, and conversation will engage visitors with new cultures.
"We are excited to continue our partnership with the Northbrook Community Relations Commission in presenting this year's Celebration of Cultures," notes Howard Schultz, President/CEO of the NSYMCA. "Over the last 10 years we have worked together on many meaningful events, including the Taste of Asia festivals and Black History Month forums. We are proud to provide a home for the community to learn, experience, and appreciate the strength of our diversity."
The Celebration of Cultures is open to the public and free of charge. For updates of planned performances and activities, visit Northbrook.il.us/772/Celebration-of-Cultures.
