Boys water polo: Hersey rallies for tourney triumph
Hersey made the grade in the six-team boys water polo tournament it hosted on Saturday, coming back from a 7-1 deficit to claim a 12-11 victory over Oak Park-River Forest in the championship matchup.
Jack Casey returned from ACT testing to score 5 goals against OPRF, and Nick Koutris scored the game-winner. Hersey's Misha Nikiforov finished with a tournament-best 15 goals.
Hersey also had wins against Maine East (15-1) and Warren (12-2).
Elk Grove came up with a nice upset against Maine South, topping the Hawks 10-8 behind 4 goals from Nick Rosenorn and 3 from Christian Tchilikov. The Grens later fell to Maine East 11-10 in the third-place game.
• Barrington finished 2-1 in the four-team gathering it hosted, with each game decided by 1 goal.
The Broncos defeated both York and Maine West 8-7 but dropped a 9-8 decision to McHenry.
• In tournament play at Naperville Central, Buffalo Grove picked up a pair of wins Saturday to finished with a 3-1 record.
The Bison topped Glenbrook South 12-9, then topped Mundelein 9-3 on Saturday.
On Friday, BG edged Hinsdale Central 6-5 and fell 11-2 to the highly regarded host Redhawks.
