Sisters celebrate chiropractic practice anniversary in Libertyville

LIBERTYVILLE - Having already given birth to six children, Ann Marie Mathis knew that she would face lower back and neck pain as her seventh pregnancy progressed. So she decided to take a proactive approach.

"I was first introduced to North Shore Pro-Active Health a little over a year ago," the Wadsworth mom said. "I just had my seventh child Feb. 1, and I was seeing Dr. Jade on a weekly basis."

The chiropractic care Mathis received from both Dr. Jade Dellinger and her sister, Dr. Jordan Leasure - as well as from one of the massage therapists on staff at North Shore - made all the difference, Mathis said.

"They've been extremely helpful," she said, noting that, even at age 45, she experienced minimal pain throughout the pregnancy. "I wanted to make sure I was in the best possible shape, stay ahead of it instead of waiting until that pain happened. It made a huge difference."

"It made a huge difference" is an oft-heard refrain for siblings Dellinger, 35, and Leasure, 39, who have been practicing together at their wellness center at 112 Lake St., Libertyville, since Dellinger completed her doctor of chiropractic program in 2010.

Each sibling has her own area of expertise. Leasure, who has been a practicing chiropractor since 2006, has one course remaining to complete her Functional Medicine Practitioner certification. And Dellinger is well on her way to her certificate in pediatrics, practicing on infants as young as mere hours old.

Improper spinal alignment can wreak havoc regardless of age, manifesting itself in everything from colic to chronic ear infections in children and from thyroid disorders to diabetes in adults.

"When a vertebra is out of alignment, it signals the brain that something's not right, which then signals the body to try to fix it. The compensatory response can be everything from tight muscles to inflammation," said Dellinger. "Chiropractic addresses the source."

Both sisters said seeing patients set aside pharmaceuticals - and in some cases even avoid surgery - is profoundly gratifying. And they plan to celebrate their career choice during an 11th office anniversary party from 6 to 9 p.m. May 4 at their offices. Existing patients and those interested in learning more about chiropractic and Pro-Active Health's other services are encouraged to attend - and to wear white in keeping with the party's theme.

Discounts on services and products will be available, and free drinks, appetizers and live music will be featured in conjunction with downtown Libertyville's First Friday festivities.

Along with Drs. Jordan Leasure and Jade Dellinger, North Shore Pro-Active Health employs three massage therapists, two athletic trainers and an office manager. The doctors receive roughly 400 patient visits a month. In addition to chiropractic and functional rehabilitation, services include pre- and post-natal care, integrative health care, body contouring laser therapy, and blood chemistry analysis with supplementation and nutrition counseling.
