Boys tennis: Barrington finds momentum, stops Deerfield
It's been stop and go so far in the boys tennis season, and Wednesday's matchup between Barrington and visiting Deerfield was true to form.
Despite a late afternoon rainshower, they got the meet in.
The Broncos started slowly but finish fast in a 6-2 victory over the Warriors and coach Josh Leighton.
The dean of the coaches in the MSL West, John Roncone, had to look away at times while his team try to get balanced. And once that happened, the Broncos (3-0-0) won both singles flights and four of six at doubles.
"With the way the weather has been this spring, it's been difficult to get a real good look at what we have, and what direction our eventual starting lineup will be," Roncone said. "But today we received some good work from several of our guys to help us figure things out a little for this coming weekend."
The Broncos will host Prospect on Thursday, then will keep their fingers crossed that the eight-team Knights Invite in Mt. Prospect will be played Saturday.
"The weather is not looking very well for that invite, but maybe there will be a window that will allow us to get several matches in before the wind, rain and cold temperatures begin," Roncone said.
The Broncos' singles duo of Bradley Yu, a state qualifier last year as a freshman, and rookie Ammar Wazir (No. 2) both prevailed in straight sets. Yu came back from after trailing 4-3 in the second set to win three straight and close out Warriors sophomore Charlie Chernawsky 6-4, 6-4.
"Credit Bradley for his strong finish because of his ability to hit his shots in spots to create opportunities for himself," said Roncone.
In doubles, the reigning MSL doubles champs at No. 1 - Matt D'Amore/Aryan Sharma - won in straight sets 7-5, 6-3. Their teammates Kyle Shuff/Tim Lowe followed suit with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No 2 doubles.
"Matt and Aryan gutted their win out because they fought hard, and because they complement each other so well, while Kyle really stepped up his play and Tim hit some great overhead shots, which is so important in doubles," Roncone said.
Suven Sinhi/Nick Edels needed three sets (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) to get past Mason Gross/Joe Laurich, but the team of Brent Li/Joe Wolff were easy winners (6-2, 6-2) at No. 4.
Deerfield is schedule to host Fremd, Lake Forest and state power Stevenson on Saturday, with the Fremd-Deerfield dual scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
