Jail, probation on reduced charge for man accused of Elgin rape
A Bloomingdale man accused of an Elgin rape in summer 2017 recently pleaded guilty to a reduced charge and was released from Kane County jail after serving 290 days while his case was pending.
Ian R. Leslie, 48, of the 200 block of Glen Ellyn Road, pleaded guilty to attempted criminal sexual assault in exchange for prosecutors dismissing more severe charges, such as aggravated criminal sexual assault under the threat of force.
He was sentenced to 180 days in jail, which he had already completed, along with 30 months of sex offender probation. He must not take drugs or alcohol during the probation and must get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow all recommendations, according to his sentence.
Leslie also must register for life as a sex offender and is to have no contact with the victim, who was in agreement with the sentence, prosecutors said. Kane County Judge D.J. Tegeler accepted the plea last week, records show.
Leslie had been held at the Kane County jail on $150,000 bail since his arrest in mid-June in Elgin.
According to a police report, officers responded to an apartment on DuPage Avenue in the early morning hours of June 20 and heard a woman yelling from an upper unit. Officers forced their way in and saw a naked Leslie leaving the bedroom area.
The woman told police that Leslie arrived about 90 minutes earlier, pounding on the door, intoxicated and looking for his cellphone, the report said.
The woman said she was going to sleep early because she had to work, but Leslie grabbed her from behind, forced her face down on the bed, choked her and sexually assaulted her, according to the police report.
Under the plea agreement, an order of protection that the victim obtained against Leslie also was extended to October 2022, which is two years after he completes his sex offender probation. If Leslie violates his probation, he could be resentenced to up to seven years in prison.
