Metea Valley student charged with possession of weapon

A 17-year-old Metea Valley High School student was released to his guardians Friday after he was charged in DuPage County with unlawful possession or storage of a weapon.

Aurora police Sgt. Ted Grommes said another student at the Aurora school told administrators the teen had a weapon in his vehicle.

"Administrators and the school resource officer talked to the student and then went out to the juvenile's car and found a starter pistol in the glove box," Grommes said. "So he was taken into custody. We then released him to his guardians and he was later referred to juvenile court services."

Grommes said the arrest was not in connection with any threat.

In a message to parents, Principal Darrell Echols said: "The police determined the starter pistol did not contain any of the blanks used in athletic events and was not capable of causing harm. At no time were any of our students threatened or harmed."

Echols also praised the student who reported the gun for "acting responsibly" and immediately notifying administrators.
