Or Shalom offers full slate of spring, summer activities
Or Shalom will be one of many locations around the world that will be honoring those lost in the Holocaust.
On Sunday, April 8, at 7 p.m., guest speaker Lauren Hasten, granddaughter of Holocaust survivor Rae Kushner, will recount how her grandmother and a few family members escaped the Nazi ghetto in Poland, then found protection from the Bielski Partisans. The service at the temple will be led by seventh-grade students. There is no fee to attend.
Delving further into history, Stephen Hall will provide information about "How Women Shaped the Story of Ancient Israel" at Or Shalom at 7 p.m. Wednesdays, April 11 and 25.
In the biblical narrative of ancient Israel, much attention is focused on prophets and kings, yet the stories of the women discussed in Deuteronomy created a paradigm shift in the story of the ancient land.
During the three-week study session, the stories of Rahab, Deborah, Hannah and both Abigail and Bathsheba will be studied. The fee is $18 per person for the three classes. Advance registration is required; contact the temple office.
A special memorial/Yizkor service will be held at the temple Friday, April 6, at 10 a.m.
Kids can bring a furry friend, wear their PJs and stay for the milk and cookie oneg when families attend the Teddy Bear Shabbat Young Children's Service at Or Shalom at 6 p.m. Friday, April 20. Children with April birthdays will be celebrated and are encouraged to bring an unwrapped gift for a child in need. April anniversaries also will be celebrated at this time.
Or Shalom is honored to have among its members at least three professional singers - Laurie Akers, the new cantorial soloist, Kenzie Connor and Cathy Glickman. The trio will perform a concert called "Stages of Light" at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 28. Tickets start at $20. Call the temple for information.
The temple's book club will meet next at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 3. A discussion of "Moonglow" by Michael Chabon will be facilitated by Rachel Kamin. The evening is free
Thousands of people across the country fall victim to scams on a daily basis. On Wednesday, May 9, Winnetka Police Sergeant Karl Larson, will discuss "Cons, Scams and Identity Theft" starting at 7 p.m. at the temple, and will address common criminal scams and how to avoid them. Admission is free.
For centuries, the Bible has been a source of inspiration for artists and writers. As evidenced by the likes of The Byrds, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and many others, modern pop musicians have been influenced as well.
On Wednesday, June 13, at 7 p.m., Eric Berman will provide the stories behind the songs as favorite artists carve "The Bible in Rock." There is no admission for this program.
Bring your blankets, chairs and dinner and join in a summer Or Shalom favorite event. Shabbat in the Park will be held at Century Park Island in Vernon Hills Friday, June 22, and will start with a BYO picnic dinner at 6 p.m. The service will begin at 7 p.m. In the event of inclement weather, the evening will take place at the temple.
