Boys volleyball: Buffalo Grove tops Wheeling for winning East debut

Buffalo Grove posted a 25-21, 25-17 triumph to win its Mid-Suburban East boys volleyball opener against visiting Wheeling on Tuesday.

Brian Franz led the Bison attack with 11 kills from 19-of-20 hitting while Ethan Soifer (10-of-11 serving, 2 aces) put down 5 kills on 10-of-14 hitting. Jack Vaselaney was 4-of-4 for 3 kills as Scott Mahon made 24 sets with 13 going for assists.

Wheeling (3-3, 0-1) was paced on attack by Jared Moser, who put down 7 kills, followed by Ryan Thomas with 3. Jon Janowski, Kuba Ciepiela and Jan Baranowski each added 2 kills in the offense set by Jared Ureta (14 assists, 2 kills).

Joseph Hernandez collected 31 digs for the Wildcats.

Palatine d. Hoffman Estates: The Pirates got a big hitting performance from junior Curtis McLennan in a 25-15, 25-19 victory over visiting Hoffman Estates in Mid-Suburban West play.

McLennan came up with 16-for-20 hitting and 11 kills to lead the attack for Palatine, and teammates Johnny O'Shea and Bryant Smith had 5 kills apiece.

Ben Rinella provided 22 setting assists and Connor Nix had a team-best 8 digs for the Pirates.

Prospect d. Rolling Meadows: Prospect posted a 25-12, 15-25, 25-22 win in the Mid-Suburban East.

Leading Meadows on attack were Max Schertler (19-of-22, 8 kills), Arthur Barczak (11-of-12, 4 kills) and Max Sobkowicz (7-of-7, 3 kills) while Jackson Brossett (16 assists) and Billy Psarros (6 assists) handled the setting duties.

Charlie Behrens had 13 digs for the Mustangs and Billy Tompkins had four while also serving 13-for-14 with 1 ace.

Fremd d. Conant: The visiting Vikings improved to 2-0 overall and went to 1-0 in the MSL West with a 25-23, 25-16 victory.

Senior middle Aaron Peterson paced Fremd with 12 kills, with strong hitting support from teammates Rocco Stella (7 kills) and Justin Spiekermann (5).

Martin Michalski went 10-for-12 serving with 3 aces, and senior senior Jacob Peterson provided 19 assists.

Hersey d. Elk Grove: Christian Hong came up with a team-best 12 digs as the visiting Huskies started MSL East play with a 25-9, 25-16 victory.

Camran Saeed (8 kills) and Jacob Mailloux (7) led the attack for Hersey (2-1). Other big contributors included Jakub Migus (31-for-32 setting, 22 assists) and Joe Nugent (6 kills, 2 blocks).
