The Saint Paul Mount Prospect 7/8 Girls' Basketball Team finished their season in mighty fashion at the National Lutheran Basketball Tournament in Valparaiso, Indiana March 23-25. Seeded ninth out of 32 teams from across the country, the Comets, 23-0 in the regular season, kept up their winning ways, advancing to the finals on Sunday. They lost the Championship game to another local team, Immanuel Lutheran in Palatine, in a never-give-up game.

In addition, the Comets won the National Team Sportsmanship Award, which is testament not only to the team's demeanor during competition, but also the coaches' and fans' as well. Head Coach Matt Gutzler echoed the sentiments of Athletic Director Eric Young when he said, "Success isn't just about winning games. We want to exemplify Christian Sportsmanship in everything we do."

Leading into the National Tournament, the Comets had gone undefeated until the Lutheran State Semifinal, which went into double overtime. The Comets won the Sportsmanship Award at the State level as well, a remarkable achievement in the eyes of Principal Jennifer Heinze. "We're proud of our team, coaches, and fans! They've all been gracious and positive during our winning season, and also displayed fine character during those two tough games this season."

Besides Head Coach Gutzler, the Comets were coached by Kevin Mueller, and assisted by alum Molly Wilson.
